About Amanda and Elizabeth
My name is Amanda Swartzlander. I have spent the past 15 years serving as a middle school teacher in Asheville, North Carolina. My passion for teaching comes from my desire to ensure that all students feel welcome, safe and successful in the academic setting. I enjoy teaching English Language Arts and Social Studies, combining the curriculum to allow my students the opportunity to make connections and discoveries in their learning. I completed my undergraduate work at Mars Hill University and my Graduate and Post-Graduate work at Gardner-Webb University. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, I am a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan and bleed black and gold.
I am Elizabeth Johnson. For the last 13 years, I have taught elementary school at Wendell Creative Arts and Science Magnet Elementary School, the same elementary school I attended as a child. As a child, my grandmother, a retired teacher, told me many stories about the joys of being a teacher, thus instilling a dream of teaching in me as well. I completed my undergraduate degree in Child Development at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, where I also enjoyed singing in a quintet called The Bathtub Ring. After graduation in 2002, I began teaching, and married my husband, Greg, in 2003. We have two children, Heath (9) and Finn (6) and continue to reside in Wendell, my hometown.
